Liberation: Telling the Stories is the theme for the annual Sonoma County Yom Hashoah Commemoration. Traditional candle-lighting ceremony by Holocaust survivors escorted by local teens and college students, this year’s program will feature a Dramatic Reading based on the liberation reminiscences of five Holocaust survivors from our own community written by Susanne Batzdorff and directed by Kathy Pither. This reading will be framed by musical selections. The winner of the annual Susy Raful Essay Contest will read the winning essay and several Sonoma County rabbis will open and close the event with remarks and prayers. Fredi Bloom, Cantorial Soloist at B’nai Israel in Petaluma will sing solemn liturgical pieces. Yellow candles will be available for audience members to take home and light in memory of their loved ones who perished in the Shoah. The event is co-sponsored by Sonoma County synagogues, the Jewish Community Center, Sonoma County, Sonoma State University Alliance for the Study of the Holocaust, Remember Us: The Holocaust Bnai Mitzvah Project, the Jewish Community Relations Council/North Bay Region and the Jewish Community Federation, Sonoma County Region
